Financial statement analysis
 

The analysis and understanding of publicly available financial statements are pre-requisite for several decisions in business. The evaluation of information derived from financial statements is not only part of the banks’ credit rating process, and essential for the assessment of new customers’ or business partners’ creditworthiness, but also a method used as part of peer group and competitor analysis.

 

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for those who, during their job, frequently analyse the public financial statements of companies and prepare reports based on this information that support various business decisions.

 

Course methodology

During the course practical cases and examples enable participants to understand and to apply the different methods of financial statement analysis, highlighting all the advantages and disadvantages and limitation arising from each method. The course is based on real life cases and examples that are worked out together in the classroom in Microsoft Excel.

 

Agenda

Day 1

  • Introduction into financial statement analysis
  • Methods aiming at understanding business sectors and industries
  • Types of annual report, content of the annual report, preparation financial statement for analysis
  • Analysis of the balance sheet (Statement of Financial Position): vertical and horizontal ratios, debt ratios, capital structure
  • Analysing liquidity position: liquidity ratios, working capital analysis, cash conversion cycle, working capital management, cash flow statement preparation and analysis

Day 2

  • Analysis of the Profit and Loss Statement: structure of profit & loss, sources of income, profit margins, efficiency ratios, return ratios
  • Ratio systems: ROI, Du-Pont and ROE break-down method
  • Methods of corporate failure prediction
  • Peer group and competitor analysis
  • Redflags of manipulating financial statements
  • Limitations of financial statement analysis
